Prayer vigil for Fortight for Freedom is Tuesday

St. Paul will have an evening candlelight prayer vigil on Tuesday, July 3, at 7:p.m. in the church for the Fornight for Freedom.

The Catholic Bishops of the United States has called for a 14-day period of prayer, study, teaching and public action to defend the first freedom, religious freedom.

A Fortnight for Freedom extending until July 4 calls for “prayer and public witness for religious freedom” to call attention not only to the issues raised by the HHS mandate for
contraception coverage but also to the important role of religious expression in American society.

Here is a bulletin insert prepared by the bishops:

As Catholics we are constantly called to live out our faith in our daily lives. In our charities, we comfort the sick, feed the hungry, care for the poor, and protect life. In the marketplace, our values guide us. We strive everywhere to practice what we preach.

Across America, our right to live out our faith is being threatened - from Washington forcing Catholic institutions to provide services that contradict our beliefs, to state governments prohibiting our charities from serving the most vulnerable. And around the world, it’s even worse - Catholics face persecution and even death for their witness.

These rights are fundamental. They belong to each and every human being. We cannot let them be trampled.

Clemency plea rejected by 5-3 vote

Ohio’s Death Penalty. Mr. John Eley. In a 5-to-3 split decision issued on June 20, 2012, the Ohio Parole Board rejected clemency for Mr. Eley. Mr. Eley is scheduled to be executed July 26. The three dissenting votes in this case reflect the opinion of the original prosecuting attorney and one of the original judges on the case—both of whom support clemency for Mr. Eley. This split decision is the first time Governor Kasich will be faced with a clearly divided parole board. Ohioans to Stop Executions fully supports clemency in Mr. Eley’s case due to itsunique circumstances. Mr. Abdul Awkal. Mr. Awkal was scheduled to die earlier this month for the 1992 murders of his wife and brother-in-law. That execution date was postponed by Governor Kasich for two weeks so Mr. Awkal could be mentally evaluated. A Cuyahoga County judge has since ruled that Mr. Awkal is not mentally competent to be executed. Mr. Awkal still needs tobe issued a formal stay of  execution, but that may not happen after the recent ruling
of incompetence. And unless Governor Kasich commutes his sentence to life in prison, he will continue to receive execution dates (there is also the possibility that Mr. Awkal could be forcibly medicated, then ruled competent and executed). But as it stands now, he is a mentally unfit man. Your help is needed. You can sign a petition urging Governor Kasich to commute Mr. Eley’s and Mr. Awkal’s sentences to life without parole by going to www.otse.org and clicking on the link, or by calling Governor Kasich at 614-466-3555, or by writing to him at 77 S High St, 30th Fl, Columbus, OH 43215-6117.

Mass for Theresia Olga Schaaf is Saturday

Theresia Olga Schaaf, 98, went home with the angels to heaven on June 27, 2012.

Mom was born March 13, 1914 to Theresia and Joseph Kamrad in Akron, Ohio. She had three sisters – Hermina,
Laura, and Jan and one brother, Joseph, all deceased.

Mom belonged to St. Paul's Parish for over 50 years and The Ladies Guild of St. Paul. She worked in St. Paul's Convent in the 1950's. She was a seamstress and tailor for Robert Hall Clothes and Langs & Diamonds Menswear for many years.

Mom was up at 5 a.m., ready to go whether it was a home project, painting, building shelves or lugging furniture around – no job was too tough for her. But more than that, her biggest job was a caregiver to so many people all throughout her life. She would care for the sick, make meals, clean and was always there when someone needed her help. She was the nurse, hairdresser, babysitter, baker, taxi driver, and anything else you needed.

In all her 98 years, Mom never had a bad word to say about anyone. She never complained about any of her own medical problems that she dealt with, always was optimistic and had a smile for everyone.

She was famous for her great cooking and baking. The kids all looked forward to coming to "Little Grandma's" for her skinny pancakes, spritz krapfen, paprikash and strudels and the best dobos torte ever. Easter was the lamb cakes, Christmas was granzel and all her old cookie recipes. She would send crazy mail order gifts at Christmas to her grandkids so they would have a laugh and know she was thinking of them. Every time she said goodbye, she would say her line to get the kids laughing, "See ya later alligator and after while crocodile" and "last tag."

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie; daughter, Pat Brooker; dear friend, Frank Baird; and her best friend "Buddy" the cat.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Bunny (Bob) Balogh and Pam (Bill) Morris. She leaves eleven grandchildren, David (Rosemary) Brooker, Lora (Chris) Evans, Bridget (Carl) Jarvis, Patrick (Mary Jo) Brooker, Michelle (David) Scalera, Kelly (John) Lambert, Amy (Billy) Sprinzl, Shannon (Ryan) Prescott, Daniel Balogh, Rachel Spiteri and Dawn (Brian) Dausman; 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1580 Brown St. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hummel Funeral Home, 500 E. Exchange St., on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Summit County Humane Society, 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087 or St. Jude Shrine, 512 W. Saratoga St., Baltimore, MD 21201. Please visit www.hummelcares.com to share a memory or to send a condolence.

Bishop Sheen on path to sainthood

Archbishop Fulton Sheen has been declared “venerable,” and may now be beatified if a miracle is attributed to his intercession.

The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints announced on June 28 that Archbishop Sheen—whose television preaching made him one of America’s best-known public figures in the 1960s—had lived a life of “heroic virtue,” and thus qualified for the title “venerable.” The certification of a miracle attributed to his intercession is now the only remaining requirement for his canonization.

The Vatican said Thursday the pope formally recognized the "heroic virtues" of Sheen, a former Rochester bishop who died in New York in 1979. That formality paves the way for procedures aimed at possible beatification, the last formal step before sainthood.

Sheen (1895-1079) was born Peter John Sheen in El Paso, Illinois, in 1895. He began using his mother’s maiden name, Fulton, as his nickname. As an infant, Sheen contracted
tuberculosis and nearly died. When the family moved to Peoria, Illinois, Sheen became an altar boy at St. Mary's Cathedral. Sheen was educated at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, Illinois, and completed further studies at St. Paul Seminary and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He eventually earned a doctorate in philosophy at the Catholic University and later became the first American ever to win the Cardinal Mercier award for the best philosophical treatise.

Sheen was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, and quickly became a renowned theologian. However, Sheen’s greatest achievement began when he started using media like radio and television to communicate a Catholic message. He hosted the radio show The Catholic Hour from 1930–1950, and hosted two television shows, Life Is Worth Living (from 1951 to 1957) and The Fulton Sheen Program (from 1961–1968). Sheen got involved in these mediums at a time when television was in its infancy and radio rarely had Catholic programming. After two decades, his broadcast had a weekly listening audience of four million people. Time Magazine referred to him in 1946 as "the golden-voiced Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, U.S. Catholicism's famed proselytizer" and reported that his radio broadcast received between 3,000 to 6,000 letters weekly from listeners, with his television program receiving around 8,500 letters per week. There were four times as many requests for audience tickets than could be fulfilled. Sheen also won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality

Three from U.S. to receive pallium

Every year on June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, the pope places a pallium around the neck of each prelate named in the past year to head an archdiocese.

Prelates from the U.S. scheduled to receive a pallium from Pope Benedict XVI this year are:
- Archbishop Charles Joseph Chaput O.F.M. Cap. of Philadelphia, U.S.A.
-Archbishop William Charles Skurla of Pittsburgh of the Byzantines, U.S.A.
-Archbishop William Edward Lori of Baltimore, U.S.A.

The sign of an archbishop's authority is not a scepter, but a circular stole made of lamb's wool to evoke the idea that he is, first of all, a shepherd.

The stole, called a pallium, goes around the archbishop's neck and is worn over his chasuble when he celebrates the Eucharist. It has a 12-inch strip of material hanging down the front and back.

Fox 8's Stefani Schaeffer shares her faith

While Fox 8′s Stefani Schaefer always shows strength and positivity as she gives updates on Roger, she had an extra gleam in her eye on Tuesday.

Her husband is recovering from an April accident during which he fell 12 feet off scaffolding while working at a construction site.

Stefani told viewers Roger made the Sign of the Cross and kept his hands folder during prayer.

She also showed some beautiful rosary bracelets that were made for her family as gifts.

Read the update in Stefani’s own words below, as it was posted on her Facebook fan page.

On Monday, she wrote:
“Today, Roger made the Sign of the Cross… just took our breath away! How beautiful. Some things you just never forget and are instinct and just a part of us…. it’s amazing. God is so good!!! Have a beautiful night!!!”
