Pope urges end to death penalty

.- Pope Benedict XVI encouraged countries around the world to end the death penalty as a legal sanction at today’s general audience.

Addressing a group of pilgrims gathered in Rome for an international conference on the controversial topic, the Pope said he hopes that their deliberations “will encourage the political and legislative initiatives being promoted in a growing number of countries to eliminate the death penalty.”

The conference was organized by the Italian-based Sant'Egidio Community under the theme of “No Justice without Life.” The Pope told them that he applauded “the substantive progress made in conforming penal law both to the human dignity of prisoners and the effective maintenance of public order.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that the traditional teaching of the Church “does not exclude” recourse to the death penalty when it is “the only practicable way to defend the lives of human beings effectively against the aggressor.” It adds, however, that today such cases are “very rare, if not practically non-existent.”

Recent figures suggest that around a third of the world’s countries use the death penalty as part of their legal code. In the United States, there are currently 34 states where the death penalty is legal.

A reminder on Bible phone line

The holidays can be difficult for some – especially for shut-ins. Now seems a good time to remind our viewers about the Presentation Ministries Bible Telephone Line.

It’s a local call for the Akron area available 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

330-344-9180

Since 1991 the Presentation Ministries Bible Telephone Line has operated in cities throughout the United States to feed hundreds daily with God’s word and to encourage attendance at daily Mass. The daily 4-minute message includes a teaching on the Eucharistic readings for the day and a prayer line. You also can record your own prayer requests.

Saint Paul TODAY hopes our viewers will help spread the word especially to those who cannot attend Mass. You may not be able to attend Mass daily, but we hope this Telephone Line will be a welcome addition to your daily prayer life.

Some Saint Paul TODAY viewers already may be familiar with the “One Bread, One Body” a daily reflection on the Eucharistic readings offered by Presentation Ministries. There are occasionally booklets in the narthex with these readings for the month. Some of our viewers subscribe to receive it daily by email

Please note in our list of links we have added one for Presentation Ministries where you can subscribe to the reflections and also find other features such as quotations from Pope Benedict XVI in a series called Shepherd of Truth.

Please spread the word to friends in other parishes

Pew cards will help with new responses

Pew cards and a new Missalette will be in the pews this weekend for the First Sunday of Advent as the new Roman Missal changes take effect. The pew cards are a tri-fold card folded from an 8 1/2 by 11 cardstock. You will need them until you learn the proper responses of the new Roman Missal.

Where you used to respond "And also with you" you will now say instead "And with your spirit." That response is used several times in the Mass. In saying the Confiteor, it will be a return to the old response "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grevious fault," striking the breast three times.

When the Creed is said you will now say "I believe" instead of "We believe." The word "consubstantial" is used in the Nicene creed.

The response to the invitation to Communion will now be "Lord I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, but only say the word and my soul will be healed,"

Environmental stewardship principles

Our Judeo-Christian heritage teaches the following principles as the foundation of environmental stewardship: 1) God, the Creator of all things, rules over all and deserves our worship and adoration. 2) The earth, and with it all the cosmos, reveals its Creator's wisdom and is sustained and governed by His power and loving kindness. 3) Men and woman were created in the image of God, given a privileged place among creatures, and commanded to exercise stewardship over the earth. 4) Human beings are called to be fruitful (Gen. 1:27-28), to bring forth good things from the earth, to join with God in making provision for our temporal well being, and to enhance the beauty and fruitfulness of the rest of the earth. 5) This call implies a serious commitment to fostering the intellectual, moral, and religious habits and practices needed for free economies and genuine care for the environment.
(Excerpts from Environmental Stewardship in the Judeo-Christian Tradition )

Message from the pastor

Dear Parishioners,
The weekend of our traditional national feast of Thanksgiving is crowned with the opening and bright beginning of a new liturgical year. We begin a new year of
grace as we follow the cycle of events and feasts which recall how God is ever-present to us. We journey through the year “remembering” and “entering into” more fully the gift of salvation which we have in and through Christ Jesus. Our Church Year begins with the Season of Advent. There is a beautiful hymn of the Church which exudes a sense of longing and anticipation of these early weeks of
the Church Year before Christmas. “You heavens send down your dew (Rorate coeli desuper) and let the clouds rain down the Just One...let the earth be opened (terra
aperiatur) and bring forth the Savior. More than longing and dreaming for “more stuff,” we can find great joy and peace in keeping alive the desire for the touch and presenceof God’s love in our lives. His grace is like a welcome gentle morning dew for our souls.

Fill me with Your Presence, O Lord
Listen, O Lord, to my prayers. Listen to my desire to be with you, to dwell in your house, and to let my whole being be filled with your presence. None of this is possible without you. When you are not the one who fills me, I am soon filled with endless thoughts and concerns that divide me and tear me away from you. Even thoughts about you, good spiritual thoughts, can be little more than distractions
when you are not their author. Every day I see again that ony you can teach me to
pray, only you can set my heart at rest, only you can let me dwell in your presence. No book, idea, concept or theory will bring me close to you unless you yourself are the one who lets these instruments become the way to you. Help me to remain open to your initiative. Let me wait patiently and attentively for that hour when you will come and break through all the walls I have erected. Yes, Lord, teach me to pray, and to remain open to your presence. Amen.

Pro Orantibus Day: Pray for those who pray

Pope Benedict XVI has set Monday (Nov. 21), the Feast of the Presentation of Mary, as a day to pray for cloistered religious. It is called Pro Orantibus Day (“For those who pray”).

Pro Orantibus Day was established by Pope John Paul II in 1997, to be held each year on the Memorial of Mary’s Presentation in the Temple, as a way to provide spiritual and material support ―for those who pray.

The Holy Father asked that this ecclesial event be observed worldwide, and that it be observed as a special day to thank those in the cloistered and monastic life for serving as “a leaven of renewal and of the presence of the spirit of Christ in the world.”

There are 1035 women religious in the Cleveland Diocese.

Prayer in Support of the Cloistered Life

Eternal Father,

We praise and thank you for those sisters and brothers who have embraced the gift of the cloistered and monastic life. Their hidden presence in our world is indispensable to the Church’s life and mission.

As we celebrate Pro Orantibus Day, let us honor the holiness and glory of the Blessed Virgin. May she intercede so that many young people might dedicate themselves entirely to Your divine service by living lives of prayer and sacrifice.

May all of us always be mindful of the spiritual and material needs of those who commit their lives to seeking God by fixing their gaze on those things which are eternal.

We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Hudson woman to get Cosgrove Award

Lisa Greene, a member of St. Mary Parish in Hudson, will receive the Bishop Cosgrove Justice Award at at the annual dinner of the Catholic Commissipn Friday, December 2, at St. Matthew Parish in the Fr. Silva Center, 2580 Berne Ave . In Ellet.

Greene, 50, of Hudson, is being honored for her ongoing commitment to social justice, particularly her role in bringing a 13-year-old Ugandan girl to the United States for facial reconstructive surgery. Greene and her husband, Matthew, opened their home in August to Mackline Tumusiime and her 24-year-old companion and translator, Maria Nakafeero, who is the equivalent of a physician’s assistant in her community in East Africa.

Lisa Greene met Mackline two years ago during a medical mission trip to Kabingo, a small village in Uganda..

“As part of the missionary group, we were providing medical care to people who have never had medical treatment,” said Greene, a registered nurse who works in the Solon school district. “I was helping staff a rudimentary clinic in Kabingo, and one day Mackline showed up, asking for help.”

The young girl, who had walked for miles to reach the clinic, was mauled by a wild pig when she was 11 months old. The injuries she sustained prevented her from closing her right eye and her mouth and caused her to lose her right ear. Greene saw to it that she got reconstructive surgery.

The cold weather is with us again and Winter is just around the comer. That means that the homeless in our area are in dire need of blankets to stay warm and stay alive. This need continues throughout the Fall, Winter and Spring. Many times the blankets that are issued become soaked due to rainy or snowy weather and must be
replaced. Our parishioners have been very generous in past years and we appeal to you again for help. It is not necessary to purchase new or expensive blankets, used
work just as well. Also, cash donations actually go farther as we have some established sources that we can purchase from in bulk. If you wish to make a cash donation, please
drop an envelope in the collection basket marked "BLANKET DONATION." There will also be a blanket box in the narthex for donations throughout the cold months

U. S. is largest global warming source

Scientists worldwide have arrived at consensus that the earth is warming due to atmospheric pollution and that human actions are causing global warming (aka climate change). The United States is the largest source of global warming pollution. Although Americans make up just 4% of the world's population, we produce 25% of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning. The United States emits more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan combined. China and India are quickly catching up, but as the world's top developer of new technologies, the US is well positioned to take the leadership role in solving this global problem. The Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) unequivocally agrees that the poor throughout the world will be most affected by the disastrous effects of global warming unless this trend is halted. Catholic Social Teaching instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relation ship with God and all of His creation. Commemorating SS Peter & Paul basilicas

Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls

Today the church commemorates the dedication of the churches of SS. Peter and Paul.

St. Peter’s is probably the most famous church in Christendom. Massive in scale and a veritable museum of art and architecture, it began on a much humbler scale. Vatican Hill was a simple cemetery where believers gathered at St. Peter’s tomb to pray. In 319 Constantine built on the site a basilica that stood for more than a thousand years until, despite numerous restorations, it threatened to collapse. In 1506 Pope Julius II ordered it razed and reconstructed, but the new basilica was not completed and dedicated for more than two centuries.

St. Paul’s Outside the Walls stands near the Abaazia delle Tre Fontane, where St. Paul is believed to have been beheaded. The largest church in Rome until St. Peter’s was rebuilt, the basilica also rises over the traditional site of its namesake’s grave. The most recent edifice was constructed after a fire in 1823. The first basilica was also Constantine’s doing.

New website: Marriage Unique for Reason

Catholics seeking reliable information on what the Catholic Church teaches about marriage will now be able to visit www.marriageuniqueforareason.org, a website featuring resources such as an extensive FAQ section on the meaning of marriage, a compilation of Catholic teaching on marriage, a blog, and videos, “Made for Each Other” and “Made for Life.”

The site, which was launched by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, also invites visitors to subscribe to the blog. Portions of the site will be translated into Spanish.

“The launch of the Marriage: Unique for a Reason website demonstrates the continued efforts of the bishops to educate the faithful on the unique meaning of marriage as the union of one man and one woman and on marriage’s foundational place for the flourishing of any society,” said Bishop Salvatore Cordileone of Oakland, California, chairman of the Subcommittee. “The website will establish an online presence for the Subcommittee’s work, and will serve as a reliable place where inquiring Catholics and others can find authentic teaching about marriage. I encourage all those working to educate others about marriage’s meaning to take advantage of the site, especially priests, deacons, catechists and teachers.”

Academic Showcase was tremendous

The variety of displays at the St. :Paul School Academic Showcase was -- as the pre-kindergarten offering above suggests –- tremendous. There also seemed to be a nice crowd of parents on hand in the Parish Activity Center on Wednesday evening to take note.

Getting a lot of attention was a large wall filled with cards with the theme “When I
Grow Up.”

Fourth grade teacher Janet Hazlett put up a card showing a photo of her as a young child with the message “I worked in the Main library downtown when I was in school. I used to water ski slalom style (one ski)! I have three sisters and two brothers.” The inside of the card revealed it was ‘Mrs. Hazlett.”

Science teacher Jud Hartman drew crowds with his science projects.

There was a screen showing videos.

Principal Robert Brodbeck was busy trying to get around to all of the displays. He spent some time serving behind the refreshment dtable

Students also were playing cornhole (bean bag toss) in one area of PAC

Parents could pick up a handout to test their knowledge of religion, English, math, social studies, science and reading.

Here’s the science quesion:
What is the purppose of the cambrium?
A. to make food
B. enable growth of xylem and phloem
C. to make flowers

If you got the answer without googling, you might be almost as smart as a fifth grader.

Or you could just click here and look at more photos of the Showcase.

Devotions for an Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath is a popular custom that originated in Germany in the 16th century. It consists of an evergreen wreath and four candles. three purple and one rose. The candles are lit every night during Advent—one purple candle the first week, two the second week, two purple and the rose candle the third week and all of them the fourth week.

Anyone may light the candles but some families have adopted the custom of h
aving the youngest child light the first week, the oldest the second week, the mother the third week and father the fourth week.

The steps below describe how to bless the Advent wreath.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

2. Pray the Responsory
The leader recites the verse, and the family (or group) responds. If you are alone, recite both the verse and the response.

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord. R. Who made Heaven and earth.

3. Optional for the blessing of wreath: Read Isaiah 9:1-2, 5-6
This passage from the Prophet Isaiah, familiar to many from Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, which reminds us that Christ is our light, and that His Birth brought us out of the darkness of sin and saved us.

4. Pray the Prayer of Blessing
The leader prays the following prayer over the Advent wreath, and the family (or group) replies "Amen."

O God, by whose word all things are sanctified, pour forth thy blessing upon this wreath, and grant that we who use it may prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ and may receive from Thee abundant graces. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

5. Sprinkle the Advent Wreath With Holy Water
The leader sprinkles the Advent wreath with holy water.

6. Pray the Advent Wreath Prayer and light the appropriate candles.

First Week
Sitr up Thy might, we pray thee and come; that, defended by Thee, we may deserve rescue from approaching dangers brought on by our sins, and being set free by Thee, obtain our salvation. Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
(One purple candle is lighted by youngest child)

Second Week
O Lord, stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the ways of Thine only-begotten Son, that through His coming we may be worthy to serve Thee with purified minds. Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
(Two purple candles lighed by oldest child)

Third Week
O Lord, we beg Thee, Incline Thine ear to our prayers, O Lord, we beseech Thee; and make bright the darkness of our minds by the grace of Thy visitation. Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
(Two purple candles and rose candle lighted by the mother)

Fourth Week
O Lord, stir up Thy great power and come to our aid so that Thy grace and merciful forgiveness may hasten what our sins impede, through Christ Our Lord Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.
(All four candles lighed by the father)

Pope to illuminate tree from Ipad

Pope Benedict XVI will use an iPad to turn on the lights of the world’s largest “Christmas tree.”

Residents of Gubbio, Italy, have arranged a series of lights on the hill overlooking their town, forming the shape of a Christmas tree over 2,000 feet high. Town officials have arranged a video conference on December 7 at which the Pope—from his residence in the apostolic palace—will touch a button on an iPad to turn on the lights and illuminate the hill.

Three-Minute Prayer

Begin the "Three-Minute Trinity Prayer" by placing yourself in God's presence, adoring Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with the Sign of the Cross and the Glory to the Father.

Then turn to Jesus and consider your most serious failing in the past twenty-four hours. Ask Jesus to forgive you.

In the second minute, think about the greatest blessing you've received in the past twenty-four hours, and thank God the Father for that blessing.

In the third, look ahead to the greatest challenge that faces you in the next twentyfour hours, and ask the Holy Spirit to be your helper and guide as you accept that challenge.

This prayer includes adoration, contrition, thanksgiving, and supplication (ACTS). It can strengthen our relationship with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, helping us realize that each of us is "the temple of the living God" (2 Corinthians 6:16).
