From the principal’s desk: Walk-A-Thon benefits

This message from St. Paul School prncipal Robert Brodbeck, on the reverse side of the October school calendar, cites the benefits of the Walk-A-Thon which is replacing the annual candy sale.

The PTO has worked very hard to make the St. Paul School Walk-A-Thon a success: ordering and distributing the T-shirts, planning the activities for Oct. 6, getting the word out to the entire community. Thank you PTO for all you do for the St. Paul School community! Talking with students, I know students have been busy obtaining pledges for their walk from their neighbors and relatives. Thank you students and parents and keep up the hard work! We have one week left to obtain pledges. As you know, the Walk-A-Thon is taking the place of our yearly candy sale and is our number one fundraiser for our school. The money raised from the Walk-A- Thon pledges will go to help keep our book bill cost to our families down, to maintain and update technology in our classrooms, to pay for special programs and projects to enhance and support our students' educational experiences. Furthermore, to follow our Mission Statement, a percentage of the money raised will go to a charity voted on by our students and staff.

Aside from the financial benefits of the Walk-A-Thon, there are also physical and emotional benefits. Fitness and health are being stressed these days, and a Walk-A-Thon is a good way to show children that exercise can be fun. Also, the teamwork aspects of events such as the Walk-A-Thon help teach students teamwork: that working toward their goals as a group can have remarkable results. Finally, I believe because of the effort put into the Walk-A- Thon by parents, students, and the staff, and because of the visibility of the eveny that the Walk-A-Thon will be a real community builder for our school.

Why is it important for us to support St. Paul School and to make the financial sacrifice to send your child to a St. Paul?

1. It is about value. In these tough times we need to be reminded that this life is only the beginning: Catholic Schools prepare students for eternity and not just for the here and now.

2. Catholic schools teach good moral values without comprise. 3. In this changing culture, we need to develop strong leaders who are not afraid to speak the truth. Catholic schools teach Jesus Christ, the most courageous speaker of the truth in all of history.

4. Catholic schools teach service and social justice better than any other educational institution.

5. Catholic schools remind our students that they are brothers and sisters and we all belong to the same family. This sense of community spirit, united by belief in one God who is constantly forming us into his body is what sets us apart.

See you October 6—Pray for good weather!

As a former parent of St. Paul Alumni, I am glad to hear that the candy sale has been replaced. I remember all to well being told I had no choice but to see the candy or buy it myself. Times were tough and we couldn't afford to purchase a box of candy.
It is my sincere hope that if there is a family in need at the school that their parents are not told they have to purchase a Tshirt or any other stuff related to the Walk-a-thom. Sometimes time and talent need to be considered for a parents share in a fundraiser.
Good Luck.
