Although Americans make up just 4% of the world's population, we produce 25% of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossel-fuel burning. The United States emits more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan combined. China and India are quickly catching up, but as the world's top developer of new technologies, the US is well positioned to take the leadership role in solving this global problem. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) unequivocally agrees that the poor throughout the world will be most affected by the disastrous effects of global warming unless this trend is halted. Catholic Social Teaching instructs us to put theneeds of the poor and vulnerable first.
