St. Vincent tower symbolizes 175-year history

St. Vincent-St. Mary eighth grade student Will Horn peers out of a 14-foot replica of the church clock tower of the St. Vincent parish float in today's St. Patrick's Day parade.

The clock tower at the center of the St. Vincent parish float is a symbol to celebrate 175 years of history for St. Vincent-the oldest parish in Akron.

''We're hoping when people see it, they will identify it as the steeple from St. Vincent Church because we are trying to raise community awareness about St. Vincent being the oldest parish in the city of Akron,'' said Pat Gorey, chairman of the 175th church anniversary committee. ''Over the next year, we will be celebrating the achievements of the past parishioners who sowed seeds for the future of the parish and we will remind current parishioners that we have been given the same responsibilities to sow seeds for our children's futures.''
