Parishioner Tony DiDonato, who usually supplies photos each week for the blog, is vacationing in Florida and sent us these four photos of the new town of Ave Maria.
Ave Maria, just east of Naples in southwest Florida, is the first modern town developed in conjunction with a university. it has been designed from the ground up to be a compact, walkable, self-sustaining town
Ave Maria, established in 2007, is a partnership between Barron Collier Companies and Thomas Monaghan, former owner of Domino's Pizza and the Detroit Tigers, and founder of Ave Maria University.
The Ave Maria community totals 5,000 acres, of which nearly 20 per cent has been set aside for Ave Maria University and its future growth. The country's newest Catholic university opened its permanent campus in Fall 2007. The university, which opened with an enrollment of about 600 students, plans to grow to approximately 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students.
Connecting the University and the town is La Piazza, anchored by the landmark Oratory and incorporating retail and commercial space as well as residential condominiums.
When completed, the town will contain some 11,000 residential dwellings. A K-12 parochial school opened in the fall of 2007, and land has been granted to the Collier County Schools for elementary and middle schools.
