Sister M. Gerald Vietmeier, OP died at the age of 89, at Regina Health Center, Richfield, Ohio on Thursday, September 2, 2010. The former Mary Clare Vietmeier was born to the late William and Mary Elizabeth Vietmeier on July 6, 1921 in Moon Run, Pa. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic, Akron from St. Philip Parish, Hanoverton, Ohio onSeptember 8, 1937 and made religious profession on July 2, 1939.
From 1939-49 Sister Gerald taught at St. Paul School, Akron. She also taught at St. Agatha School, Cleveland; St. Mary School, Wooster; SS Peter & Paul,
Doylestown, St. Dominic School, Youngstown; St. Joseph and Regina Coeli Schools, Alliance; and at St. Vincent, Akron where she was also principal from 1963-69. After leaving the field of education in 1976, she served in the environmental service department at St. Thomas Hospital, Akron. From 1982-97 she held positions of housekeeping supervisor, assistant to Coordinator of Special Services and Activities Assistant at The Village at St. Edward, Fairlawn. In 1997, she returned to Elms where she gave community service. Because of failing health, Sister Gerald was moved to Regina Health Center in Richfield in 2003. Sister was very pastoral by reaching out and giving counseling to family and her many friends.
Sister received her BSE from Siena Heights College, Adrian, Michigan in 1952 and an MA from The Catholic University of America in 1969.
Sister Gerald is survived by brothers, Leo and Lawrence; sister, Lauretta Amos and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, William, Joseph and James; sisters, Margaret Shivers, Ann Timko and Bernadette Fanslau.
Calling hours will be held at Our Lady of the Elms, 1230 W. Market St., Akron, Ohio on Monday, September 6 from 3 to 6 p.m. with a Wake Service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Elms Chapel on Tuesday, September 7 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow. Donations in memory of Sister Gerald can be made to the Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Drive, Columbus, OH 43219-2098.
