Sisters of Charity take full control at hospital

Patients and visitors probably won’t notice the difference, but Mercy Medical Center in Canton  is returning to sole ownership of the Sisters of Charity Health System.

The hospital has been under the joint ownership of the Sisters of Charity and University Hospitals since 1999. The two have a non-binding letter of intent that would end the joint ownership of Mercy and St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland.

A joint venture will remain at St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake. Financial details were not disclosed.

“All three are continuing with their Catholic identity and legacy,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, president and CEO of the health system.

She said the health system will have the financial capacity to carry through on planned projects.

“We don’t have enough capacity to serve the number of charity patients we serve at Mercy,” she said.
