600 attend Men's Fellowship Conference
An estimated 600 attended the :"Answer the Call" conference of the Men's Fellowship of Northeast Ohio at Hoban High School on Saturday,. It was probably the best-attended conference of the fellowship so far.
They listened to a half dozen speakers, sang at least that many hymns, prayed the Rosary, stood in many long confession lines to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, had a box lunch, renewed acquaintances and met new friends.
Each of the speakers said they hoped the 600 would remember the day and go out and join with others in what several speakers called a battle for morality. Former Notre Dame coach Jerry Faust brought the 300 men to their feet when he urged them to talk to legislators to stop the evil of abortion. Faust stood in one of the confession lines and went to the 7 a,.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Church on Grant Street before coming to the conference. Faust talked about the need for prayer and love and dwelt on a favorite theme that making good men is more important than making good ballplayers.
Danny Abramavoich, former NFL wide receiver and host of the new “Crossing the Goal Show” on EWTN, bounded back and forth on the stage to pound home his message that secularism is replacing God. Then he rattled off statistics on the $55 billion annual pornography business, co-ed living in college dorms, the 60 percent who believe abortion should be legal and on and on. “When God is not in the equation, look out,” he warned,
“This is spiritual warfare out there,” he said. “We have to change.” Three things are needed, he said; 1, :Prayer 2. The Eucharist 3. Confession.
A similar message was given earlier by Bishop George Murry of the Youngstown Diocese, who is secretary of the U.S. Bishops Conference. “We must be about the business of transforming our world,” he said. The bishop talked about the meaning of words but said that more powerful than any are “Words from the altar that change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ.”
Fr. Philip Chavez told the men “You are called to be leaders.” Every man should lead and the older man need to encourage younger men, he said. A verse from the Bible summed up his message: “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
Fr, Michael Gurnick, vocations director of the Cleveland Diocese, spoke on Reconciliation and Fr. Leo Wherlin, vocations director of the Youngstown Diocese, spoke about “answering the call” of vocations like the call to Samuel in the Bible who said “Speak Lord for your servant is listening.”
The Most Rev. Richard J. Lennon, Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese, was celebrant for the closing Mass.
The next conference will be March 20, 2010 at Hoban High and will be held jointly with the new Men’s Fellowship of the Youngstown Diocese.
There were 25 parishioners from St. Paul. They were John Amedo, David Clute, Bob Considine, Eric Dadich, Michael Dadich, Adam Dadich, Joe Dadich, Rudy Didonato, Joe Eckman, Mickey Eritano, Joe Hefferan, David Kline, Ray Kline, Ken Krummel, Mickey L. Dadich, Harry Liggett, Russ Livigni, John Mastrojohn, Ron McAvoy, Hank Richard, George Roberts, John Turlik, John Wilson, John Withrow and Nick Zeno

Williamson apology is not sufficient
ROME — The Vatican said Friday that an apology by a bishop who has denied the scope of the Holocaust was not sufficient to restore him to full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, according to a story today in the New York Times..
In a statement published Thursday by Zenit, a Catholic news agency, Bishop Richard Williamson apologized to the pope, the church and “survivors and relatives of victims of injustice under the Third Reich.” But he did not address the substance of his views on the Holocaust or disavow the remarks he made in the interview.
In an informal statement to reporters on Friday, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said that Bishop Williamson’s apology “does not seem to meet the expectations” set forth by the Vatican earlier this month. He referred to a statement the Vatican issued on Feb. 4 that called on the bishop to “absolutely” and publicly distance himself from his positions on the Holocaust, or he would not be allowed to serve as a Catholic bishop.
Pope Benedict has said he revoked the excommunication of the four bishops to heal a schism in the church. The four were members of the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X, which was founded in 1970 in opposition to the liberalizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
The status of Bishop Williamson and the three other bishops remains uncertain. It hinges on internal discussions between the four and the Vatican committee that oversees relations with the society.
Bishop Williamson, a Briton, arrived in Britain earlier this week after being expelled from Argentina, where he headed a seminary near Buenos Aires until he was removed this month.
American Jewish groups on Friday praised the Vatican for its response to Bishop Williamson’s apology.

You can 'nail' your burdens to the cross

Once again during Lent, the parishioners of St. Paul are encouraged to "nail" any burden, problem, illness or struggle in your faith life to the wooden cross that is on display in the Narthex
Our pastor, the Rev. Fr. Ralph Thomas, says:
“Our hope is that by bringing our tribulations to Our Lord, He will bring about a transformation in our lives so that something good will result from our suffering.”
After Good Friday the cross with petitions nailed to it is usuallhy brought in procession to the side of the altar. The papers nailed to the cross are then burned..

Number of US Catholics declines by 398,000
Between the beginning and the end of 2007, the number of Catholics in the United States declined by nearly 400,000 to 67.1 million, according to the newly published 2009 Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches. The Catholic Church remains the largest ecclesial community in the United States. The number of Southern Baptists-- the nation’s second largest, with 16.3 million members-- declined by 40,000. Rounding out the top ten are the United Methodist Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Church of God in Christ, the National Baptist Convention USA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the National Baptist Convention of America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the Assemblies of God. Of those ten, only the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Assemblies of God reported increases.
Pope urges prayer and sacrifice during Lent
VATICAN CITY (CNA).- Pope Benedict began Lent yesterday by presiding over Mass at the Church of Saint Sabina and calling on Catholics to enter the period of conversion through frequent contact with the Word of God, more intense prayer and a penitential lifestyle. Let these be “a stimulus to convert and to love our brothers and sisters, especially the poor and needy," he said.
In his homily the Pope highlighted that "the call to conversion emerges as the dominant theme" in the Ash Wednesday liturgy.
Recalling that the Church is celebrating the 2,000th anniversary of St. Paul’s birth, he pointed out that through his conversion the Apostle was "aware of having been chosen as an example.” Because of this awareness, "St. Paul recognized that everything in him was the work of divine grace, yet he did not forget the need to accept freely the gift of new life received at Baptism."
"How can we fulfill our baptismal vocation?" the Holy Father asked. "How can we emerge victorious from the battle between the flesh and the spirit, between good and evil, the battle that characterizes our lives? Today's Gospel reading shows us three useful means to this end: prayer, alms and fasting.
Ways to live out these three practices can be found in “the life and writings of St. Paul," the Pope said. The Apostle exhorts us to "persevere" in prayer, and to "pray without ceasing." On the subject of almsgiving, he speaks of "the great collection in favor of our poor brethren" and underlines how "charity is the apex of a believer's life. ... He does not expressly mention fasting, but he often calls for sobriety as a characteristic of people called to live in vigilant expectation of the Lord," Benedict XVI explained.
Pope Benedict's prayer intentions for March
General: That the role of women may be more appreciated and used to good advantage in every country in the world.
Mission: That in the light of the letter addressed to them by Pope Benedict XVI, the Bishops, priests, consecrated persons, and lay faithful of the Catholic Church in the Popular Republic of China may commit themselves to being the sign and instrument of unity, communion and peace.

Lenten season begins at St. Paul

The Rev. Fr. Ralph Thomas and Deacon Frank Lonteen mark the foreheads of students with a cross for Ash Wednesday at the 8;30 a.m. Mass in St. Paul Church. The student body, which normally attends Mass on Friday, attended today’s Mass for the beginning of the Lenten season in our parish.

Pope Benedict XVI in his Lenten message said the faithful should restore the true meaning of fasting from caring for one's body to caring for one's brethren like the Good Samaritan.
:”I wish to focus my reflections especially on the value and meaning of fasting,” he said.. “Lent recalls the forty days of our Lord's fasting in the desert, which He undertook before entering into His public ministry.’
Bishop Richard Lennon's Lenten Message notes that this Lenten season stands at the heart of a Holy Year celebrating the 2000th anniversary of the great apostle and preacher, Saint Paul who reminds us in the second reading for Ash Wednesday that "We are ambassadors for Christ."

Commentary: Can you not visit for 30 minutes?
Was it too good to be true when an article on Saint Paul TODAY on February 16 proclaimed that the one-year anniversary of Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays at St. Paul had been reached?
A partial answer to that question came unobtrusively in the weekend bulletin. A line in the weekly schedule for Lent under Tuesday read:
Eucharistic Adoration 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Adoration will thus be available after the 7:30 a.m. Mass until noon and from 5 to 9 in the evening or for an eight-hour day. It had been available for 12 hours from 8 to 8.
The added hour in the evening might make it possible for more working parishioners to attend, but. it is necessary to have at least two persons in adoration at all times.
The February 16 blog article noted:
The Parish should strive this coming Lent not only to renew the devotion, but to increase the number of those who visit on Tuesdays. There should be no time during the day without at least two worshipers with the Blessed Sacrament.
This blog has urged parents to drop in for a few minutes when they pick up students from school or when they are driving by to some other place on an errand.
Where are the leaders of this parish who cannot help to fill at least eight hours out of one day a week? It takes only 32 people or 16 couples to fill an eight-hour time slot with each visiting for just 30 minutes. . It would take only 48 people or 24 couples for the 12-hour day which has been available from last Lent until this one.
Check this blog and you will see that we are able to do this easily for social events
There are four parishes in the Akron area that have perpetual adoration and 11 others that have it one day each week.
Clik here to see what other parishes are contributing with Eucharistic adoration.
Pope Benedict XVI stresses the importance of Eucharistic Adoration:
"In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering."
Saint Alphonsus Liguori said:
"Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us.’ The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace.”

Praying the 7 Penitential Psalms
One of our Lenten suggestions is to pray the Seven Penitential Psalms (Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130 and 143).
By order of Pope Innocent III (1198-1216), these prayers were to be prayed during the days of Lent. If they cannpt be said on each day, they can prayed on Lenten Fridays (or one could pray one psalm on each of the 7 Fridays of Lent). You begin each with a short antiiphon and recite a Gloria at the end.
Click on the headline to go to a page containing the psalms and keep it in your bookmarks or favorites so you can go to it each time.

Xt3 asks Does God have sense of humor?
Think you'll need a laugh this Lent? The social networking site Xt3, an outgrowth of World Youth Day 2008, is planning to offer some comedy relief as part of their Lenten program.
"Christ in the 3rd millennium," abbreviated Xt3, plans 40 days of podcasts (including 'Does God have a sense of humor?' featuring popular British comedians Ricky Tomlinson and Joe Pasquale, amongst others).
There will be daily readings, podcasts and music to give inspiration -- and some laughter -- during the 40 days of Lent. It will also broadcast Benedict XVI's handing over of the World Youth Day cross and icon in Rome on Palm Sunday.
The site was developed to help young people to connect with others interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith, to plug in to the Church and get to know what's going.on.

Abp. Dolan named Archbishop of New York
This post updated to add new photo and links to two New York Times stories:
For Cardinal Egan, a Focus on Taking Care of Basics
A Genial Conservative for New York’s Archdiocese
VATICAN CITY (CNA).- Pope Benedict XVI today appointed Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee to become the next Archbishop of New York, a see that the Vatican more than once has described as “the capital of the world.”
Timothy Michael Dolan was born February 6, 1950, the first of five children of Shirley Radcliffe Dolan and the late Robert Dolan. In 1964, he began his high school seminary education at St. Louis Prep
Dolan then began his time in parish ministry serving as associate pastor at Immacolata Parish in Richmond Heights, Mo., until 1979 when he began studies for a doctorate in American Church History at the Catholic University of America.
Before completing his doctorate, he spent a year researching the late Archbishop Edwin O'Hara, a founder of the Catholic Biblical Association. Archbishop O'Hara's life and ministry was the subject of the archbishop's doctoral dissertation.
On his return to St. Louis, Dolan resumed parish ministry (1983-87) and simultaneously served as a liaison for the late Archbishop John L. May tasked with restructuring the college and theology programs of the archdiocesan seminary system.
In 1987, he was appointed to a five-year term as secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C.
When he returned to St. Louis in 1992, he was appointed vice rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, serving also as director of Spiritual Formation and a professor of Church History.
In 1994, he became rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome where he served until June 2001.
While in Rome, he also served as a visiting professor of Church History at the Pontifical Gregorian University and as a faculty member in the Department of Ecumenical Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, his Alma Mater.
On June 19, 2001 –the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood- Fr. Dolan was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis by Pope John Paul II.Timothy Michael Dolan was named Archbishop of Milwaukee by Pope John Paul II on June 25, 2002.
He was installed as Milwaukee's 10th Archbishop on August 28, 2002.
The new Archbishop of New York, Dolan will be serving 2.5 million Catholics. It is he second largest in the U.S., next to Los Angeles.

37 children celebrate First Reconcilation
There were 37 children making their First Reconciliation at St. Paul Church on Saturday morning. Helping the pastor, Rev. Fr. Ralph Thomas, hear the students were the Rev. Fr. William D. Karg, pastor emeritus of St. Sebastian, and the Rev. Fr. G. David Bline, pastor of St. Francis de Sales.
It was a family affair with parents participating with their children in the celebration. After a greeting by Catechetical leader Shelly Hertzig and prayer and reading of the Gospel by Fr. Thomas, parents and students both renewed their Baptismal promises.
Students, one by one, then went to confession at one of the three stations and lit their candles from the Paschal Candle. Parents accompanied their children to the penance stations and then assisted them with reciting their penance prayer. Each student was given a prayer card to keep and a Sacramental Certificate..
Catechists for the students were Miiss Mary Means, Mrs. Cathy Hartsook, Mrs. Maggie Walker, Mrs. Diana Thanasiu, Mrs. Rosemary Capotosto and Mrs. Charlotte Hertzig. Mrs. Capotosto is the school principal and Miss Mary Means is the second grade teacher, Mrs. Hertzig is catechetical leader and the others are catechists in the Parish School of Religion.
The photo here is not an actual confession. This photo and four others were posed to include in an album of First Reconciliation photos to show what the celebration was like for the students, Click on the headline to go to the photo album.

A letter from the Pastor
February, 2009
This year the Principal of our parish school will mark ten years of leadership and dedicated service to the children and parents of our day school. Mrs. Rosemary Capotosto will conclude her responsibilities as principal as of June 30, 2009, fulfilling her current contract. Many students and families have benefitted from her heartfelt and loyal commitment to the Church and the principles and mission of Catholic Education here at St. Paul Parish. Mrs. Capotosto's endeavors as teacher and principal of our school are linked with and have contributed to a praiseworthy tradition of Catholic Education here since 1926.
We join in recognizing her dedicated service and the academic contributions she has made for our parish and school. We wish her every blessing in the future.
I have formed a Search Committee that is now working to have a new principal for St. Paul School. We have publicized our need for this position on the Diocesan Website as well as St. Paul website and our parish bulletin. Anyone interested should send their resume to the parish office before March 5, 2009. We are receptive to all qualified persons. Our hope is to have selected a new principal from applications received by mid-March, 2009 and to have the best applicant in place by July 1, 2009.
Our school year 2009-10 will begin August 25, 2009 (Pre-K through Grade 8). Registrations are being accepted and welcomed.
In 2006 our Parish Survey revealed that there was a strong commitment to continue and enhance our parish school. Parents and parishioners have voiced their belief in the value and importance of faith formation and academic excellence in a day school program.
We continue to recognize that St. Paul School is central to our faith-mission and is also key to our commitment to the community at large here in South Akron.
We intend to do all we can to continue the excellent tradition we have built in St. Paul School. We ask God to bless our efforts in educating our youth in the "Light of Christ." May we approach this mission with faith, love, and trust in His divine assistance.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Ralph W. Thomas, Pastor

Diocese Report 2008: Part 2 Offertory
This is one of four articles on the Cleveland Dioecase Report to the Community 2008. The full report is in this week's Universe Bulletin.
Diocese of Cleveland Offertory Collections
Since 2000, parish offertory collections have grown a total of 11%. That is an annual growth rate of 1.4%. During these 8 years, parish expenses for utilities, maintenance, payroll, benefits, etc. have grown at a much faster average annual rate. For many parishes, the revenues are not keeping up with the growth in expenses. This modest growth in our parish offertory collections reflects the difficult economic times we continue to experience in Northeast Ohio. However, for 2008, parish offertory collections increased 2% over 2007, and almost 5% for the two years since 2006. Catholics are responding generously to the needs at many of our parishes.
Offertory Collections for fiscal years ended June 30
2000 $100,100,000
2001 $103,300,000
2002 $106,000,000
2003 $103,300,000
2004 $104,300,000
2005 $104,700,000
2006 $106,100,000
2007 $109,000,000
2008 $111,200,000
A few non-reporting parishes are estimated for this report.
Why Do We Have National and Designated Collections?
The Bishops of the United States and the Bishops of our Diocese have established national and designated collections to support the Church’s works of social justice, evangelization, and education, both domestically and around the globe. Through our parishes, every Catholic participates in a global community of faith. The national and designated collections are a powerful expression of this community. Our contributions help people across the street and around the world, people who struggle to practice the faith, people who live in great need. All these collections are worthy of support. Most of our parishes enthusiastically promote these national and designated collections with announcements, discussion and special envelopes. The Bishops of our Diocese and the Bishops of the entire global church are most grateful for this special generosity of the Diocese of Cleveland. [St. Paul collections added where known]
