Women of the Year were honored at the annual Christmas luncheon of the Summit Regional Council of Catholic Women on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Guy's Party Center. Maggie Colant was St. Paul Woman of the Year and Claire Harbarger was named Summit Region Woman of the Year.
There were 337 reservations for the annual banquet. St. Paul had eight tables.
Mrs. Harbarger gave opening and closing remarks and St. Paul’s Sandi Denholm announced Respect Life fund grants. Deacon James White of St. Bernard Parish gave the invocation and the Rev Fr. Steve Brunovsky, pastor of St. Hilary and moderator of the council, gave the benediction.
Attending from St. Paul were the pastor, the Rev. Ralph Thomas, and Deacon Frank Lonteen.
About Maggie Colant
Maggie Colant has been a member of St. Paul Parish her
entire life. She has been a member of the Ladies Guild for over fifty years. As a member of the Ladies Guild, Maggie has served as President, Vice-President, Marshall and Hostess. She is currently serving as the membership Chairman.
Maggie is also a past President of the Knights of Columbus #3410.
In addition to all she gives to the Ladies Guild, Maggie has been the Captain of the Parish Prayer Line, has helped with bake sales, receptions for priests and other events at the parish. Maggie has coordinated rummage sales for St. Paul and the Interval Brotherhood Home in Akron.
She has been the chairperson of the Annual Blood Drive for the past 14 years. Maggie has also served as past vice president and also Historian for the Firestone Park Seniors.
A terrific cook, Maggie can always be depended upon for wonderful goodies for card parties, raffles and bake sales.
Maggie is currently the Corresponding Secretary for the Summit Regional Council of the National Council of Catholic Women (SRCCW) and is the Chairman of International Concerns.
Maggie also co-chairs the twice-yearly luncheon served at the International Institute for the immigrants and refugees who are students at the Institute.
Maggie is the past Chairman for the SRCCW Family Concerns Commission and oversaw for many years for the set up and tear down of the Nativity Scene in downtown Akron during the Christmas season.
Maggie also chaired the Caring For Children collection for SRCCW, coordinating among the parishes in the Region. This fund coordinates collections of clothing and funds for children in the Region.
Maggie served as a Booth worker for the Summit County Board of Elections for many years.
She has been married to husband Joe for 59 years. They are the proud parents of seven children. They delight in being involved in the lives of their eleven grandchildren.
Maggie and Joe are ever supportive of the activities of their children and grandchildren.
