Jewell Cardwell plugs St. Paul quilt project

Beacon Journal columnist Jewell Cardwell gave a plug to the quilt benefit raffle  of St. Paul students in a feature on the front of the Community Section.

Cardwell wrote:

Beautiful bouquets to the kindergarten and fourth-grade students at Akron's St. Paul Catholic School, who created a hand-print quilt that will be raffled today to benefit the Peter Maurin Center on South Main Street.

''We painted students' hands and printed white muslin with them,'' write fourth-grade teacher Janet Hazlett and kindergarten teacher Debbie Dodson. ''Then we used colorful rainbow fabric to join the squares together. We call it the Helping Hands Quilt. There are 25 fourth-graders and 18 kindergartners.

''Our parish is sponsoring a blanket drive for the benefit of the Maurin Center — a place of refuge for those in need — and any money we raise will help with the purchase of blankets.

''Our kindergarten and fourth-grade buddy classes also do other service projects throughout the year. We have planted tulip bulbs. We will be packing soup mix for our shut-in parishioners. And we will do other things throughout the year.''
