Anne Elizabeth Doherty, RN, "Annie", 76, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center.
Anne was born on Valentine Day, February 14, 1933 to George and Josephine (Grosmit) Jakubisin at the Bar
ber Farm in Barberton, Ohio. She attended St. John Grade School, was a graduate of Garfield High School in 1950, attended St. John College and was a graduate of St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She married the love of her life Jere Michael Doherty September 26, 1953 and together they raised four children in Firestone Park. She was a long time member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Churches.Annie was a prodigious volunteer (she couldn't say no to a good cause). Accordingly, she was a member of St. Paul Ladies Guild (Past President), Ladies Auxiliary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Firestone Park Y Mothers (Past President) and AARP 1715. She also belonged to the Crest Garden Club and volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House for 18 years. Her rummage sales at St. Paul were always a success which she credited to other volunteers.
She had a love for quilting, winning several awards for her work and taught a new quilt binding technique still in use today. She was a member of the K.I.S.S., Cascade, Memory Makers and Canton Quilting Guilds.
She loved to travel - U.S. or abroad. Her bag was "always packed". She was an avid bridge player well respected by her card playing peers. She was a lifelong Indians Fan cheering them on in front of the TV until the end.
Annie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jere Michael; children and their spouses, Tim and Becky of Hattiesburg, Ms., Shawn and Pamela of Uniontown and Mary and Tim Nicholas of Uniontown; grandchildren, Max, Mikalah, Brittney, Kevin and Zack Doherty, Britney Kurtz and Sean and Matthew Nicholas; sister, Mildred (Fred) Zenner; brothers-in-law, Bob and Jack Doherty; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and was preceded in death by her daughter Kathleen Anne Doherty, RN; her infant granddaughter, Kathleen Anne Doherty (Tim and Becky's daughter); her parents and her in-laws, Dan and Maggie Doherty.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 9:30 a.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Ketesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main Street, (Please note new address) followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Paul Catholic Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where a joint St. Paul Ladies Guild and Hibernian Rosary will be recited at 7:45 P.M. Donations may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, 433 Mission Dr., Akron, Ohio 44301 or the VNS Hospice Care Center 3358 Ridgewood Rd. Akron, Ohio 44333.
Anne never complained even though she was in almost constant pain from the cancer that began in 1984. Let us remember her smile!
