Here's trio of St. Paul 'championship' teams

The St. Paul Booster Club is proud to report on all its teams during last weekend’s Championship Tournaments. While not every team brought home the final championship trophy, all were successful and are champions in our eyes.

ainst St. Francis DeSales at St. Hilary’s gym on Saturday March 7.. In an evenly matched and very spirited game, the St. Paul Tigers pulled away from St. Francis in the 4th quarter on some clutch playing from Justin Lyde, Ryan Testa and Joe Morrison. In addition to winning the championship trophy, the boys won the League Percentage trophy for best regular season record. The team finished with a 11-1 record this year. Congratulations to Coach John Testa and his team on their win and a successful season.

The St Paul 7th-8th grade girls played for the championship against St. Fra
ncis DeSales at the James A Rhodes arena on Sunday March 8.. This game marked the third time these teams met this year. In the first matchup, St Francis defeated our Lady Tigers by a small margin. In the rematch, St. Paul’s got a small measure of revenge with a clutch win over the then-undefeated and best team in the division. It was, therefore, only fitting that the third and final game be played for the championship between the league’s best teams. Despite the 15 points poured in by team guard Natalie Bender and aggressive defense by Kendra Alexander and Alyse Bachmann the Lady Tigers fell short 26-22. The team finished with a 10-3 record this year. Congratulations to Coach Bill Fatica and his team on a successful season. Extra special thanks goes to Coach Bill Fatica on his selflessly giving of his time in coaching these girls since the 3rd grade.

8th Grade Boys

Front Row: Michael Riegger, Matt Kannel, Aaron Abernathy and Trevor Ellis.

The St Paul 8th grade boys vied for the championship against St. Francis Xavier at the James A Rhodes arena on Sunday March 8. Despite being down 7-1 in the first quarter, the Tigers spirited second team's performance vaulted them to a halftime tie. Led by clutch performances from Aaron Abernathy, Alex Muster and Adam Gray the lead seesawed back and forth between the two evenly matched teams. In a truly memorable championship performance the Tigers were able to take the game in overtime. Unfortunately St. Paul’s could not overcome the St. Francis offensive attack and fell short 36-33. Despite the fact the team did not win the championship trophy, they did enjoy a very successful season. The team finished with an undefeated regular season record winning them the League Percentage trophy . Congratulations to head coach O’Dell Lyde,, assistant coaches O’Dell Lyde Jr, and Marcus Abernathy on a successful season.
