St. Paul shares in Maurin Center story

The St. Paul connection at the Catholic Worker’s Peter Maurin Center is documented nicely in a feature by freelance writer Kevin E. Brown in this week’s issue of the Catholic Universe Bulletin. There are two photos of St. Paul parishioner Joann Heffernan who is one of a dozen St. Paul parishioners who volunteer at the center at 1096 S. Main Street each Thursday evening.

One of the photos whows Joann serving dessert and another of her in a prayer circle which precedes each meal. Heffernan started preparing meals and coodinating volunteers since the center opened. She has found success in getting Akron restaurants to donate food and parishioners give her a call to donate a dish they have prepared.

The article also quotes David Conley, the chef and caretaker who lives upstairs at the center.

To read more about the work of the Maurin Center and other volunteers from St. Paul who volunteer just type Maurin Center in the search box above

If you would like to help, call Joann at 330-773-1748.

Bishop Lennon writes about Pauline Year

Bishop Richard G. Lennon’s column in the Universe Bulletin this week (May 30, 2008) is about the upcoming Pauline Year.

Noting that St. Paul is credited with writing 13 of the 27 works of the New Testament, the Bishop urged Catholics of the diocese to follow the urging of Pope Benedict to study his writings during the Jubilee Year marking the 2000th anniversary of the birth of the Apostle. The Jubilee year will open June 29 with Vespers by the Pope at the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls where Paul is buried and continue until the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, 2009.

The Bishop wrote:

“I will initiate this Jubilee Year of Saint Paul with a special celebration of the Mass with the parish community dedicated to his patronage, Saint Paul parish on East 40th street in Cleveland. At the Cathedral parish and in all of its parishes throughout the Diocese I will be encouraging special study programs and courses dedicated to the Letters of Saint Paul, his life, and his theology.”

See our earlier post with a photo of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls.

Special feast-day observance for Pauline Year

Vatican, May. 30, 2008) - For the year 2009, the Vatican has authorized the celebration of the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul on the usual day, January 25, although the date falls on the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

A Sunday celebration would ordinarily pre-empts the observance of the feast day. But the special observance has been approved by the Vatican because of the Pauline Year declared by Pope Benedict XVI , beginning on June 28, 2008, to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Apostle.

The Vatican decision on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul was conveyed in a decree issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship, dated May 30, signed by Cardinal Francis Arinze and Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith, the prefect and secretary, respectively, of the Congregation.

St. Paul students in grades six, seven and eight traveled by bus to Progressive Field in Cleveland on Wednesday to attend the Indians game. A rally by the Chicago White Sox beat the Indians 6-5.

In case you need it for your scrapbook, here is a brief early report on the game by the Asspociated Press:

CLEVELAND (AP) If the Chicago White are trying to send the Cleveland Indians a message, it has been received.

"You look at that team over there, they're a little bit tougher than we are right now," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said after the White Sox defeated the Indians 6-5 Wednesday.

The AL Central-leading White Sox have won five of six against Cleveland in a nine-game span and 11 of 14 overall.

Chicago has beaten the Indians exactly 1,000 times.

Pitcher Gavin Floyd (5-3) allowed two runs in the first, then retired 15 of 17 hitters before the Indians scored three times to take a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Floyd gave up five runs - four earned - and eight hits in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Cleveland has lost 10 of 12, dropping 5 1/2 games back in the division. Wedge once again expressed his displeasure with the way his team is playing.

"Until we start making adjustments, (opposing teams) are going to keep sticking it to us," he said. "It's up to them to get it done. There can be no excuses."

Jake Westbrook, activated from the disabled list before the game, allowed three runs and five hits in five innings. He hadn't pitched for the Indians since April 19 because of a strained left muscle in the rib area.

Cleveland took a 5-3 lead in the sixth on David Dellucci's RBI double and Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch.

The Parents & Guardians Time & Talent Surveys were distributed through the Backpack Express at school with a due date of Wednesday May 28. Vatican releases new statistical yearbook

VATICAN CITY, 27 MAY 2008 - The Vatican Publishing House has recently released a new edition of the Statistical Yearbook of the Church, comprising information on the main aspects of Catholic Church activity in various countries for the period 2000-2006.

Over these seven years, the Catholic presence in the world has remained stable at around 17.3 percent of the total population. In Europe , despite the fact that 25 percent of all Catholics live there, the growth in the number of faithful was less than one percent. In the Americas and in Oceania their numbers grew, respectively, by 8.4 percent and 7.6 percent; in Asia they remained more or less stable with respect to population growth, whereas in Africa they increased from 130 million in 2000 to 158.3 million in 2006.

The number of bishops in the world went up from 4,541 in 2000 to 4,898 in 2006, an increase of 7.86 percent.

The number of priests also increased slightly over this seven-year period, passing from 405,178 in 2000 to 407,262 in 2006, an overall rise of around 0.51 percent. In Africa and Asia their numbers increased (respectively, by 23.24 percent and 17.71 percent), in the Americas they remained stable, while they fell by 5.75 percent in Europe and 4.37 percent in Oceania .

The number of diocesan priests increased by two percent, going from 265,781 in 2000 to 271,091 in 2006. By contrast, the number of regular priests showed a constant decline, down by 2.31 percent to 136,000 in 2006. Of the continents, only in Europe was there a clear reduction in priests: in 2000 they represented 51 percent of the world total, in 2006 just 48 percent. On the other hand, Asia and Africa together represented 17.5 percent of the world total in 2000 and 21 percent in 2006. The Americas remained steady at around 30 percent, and Oceania a little more than one percent.

Non-ordained religious numbered 55.057 in the year 2000 and 55,107 in 2006. Comparing this data by continent, Europe showed a strong decline (down by 12.01 percent), as did Oceania (16.83 percent), the Americas remained stable, while Asia and Africa increased (respectively, by 30.63 percent and 8.13 percent).

Female religious are almost double the number of priests, and 14 times that of non-ordained male religious, but their numbers are falling, from 800,000 in 2000 to 750,000 in 2006. As for their geographical distribution, 42 percent reside in Europe, 28.03 percent in America and 20 percent in Asia . The number of female religious has increased in the most dynamic continents: Africa (up by 15.45 percent) and Asia (up by 12.78 percent).

The Statistical Yearbook of the Church also includes information on the number of students of philosophy and theology in diocesan and religious seminaries. In global terms, their numbers increased from 110.583 in 2000 to more than 115.000 in 2006, a growth of 4.43 percent. In Africa and Asia their numbers went up whereas Europe saw a reduction of around 16 percent.

Grades 3 through 5 attend Aeros game

If you cannot find your child, click on the headline to see other photos

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 of St. Paul School attended the Aeros Game Thursday. The Akron Aeros were victorious – winning 6 to 4 over the Altoona Curve.

Maybe you would not know them from Adam, but the guys wearing orange jackets up front next to the woman named Linda sure look like twins to us.

If you cannot find your child or grandchild in this group, you are certain to find them in one of the other four photos in our game album provided by Jo Shoup. There’s one of the St. Paul Tiger with four other guys and a quartet of dudes with purple hair.

It was a fun game. And the kids got a hotdog, potato chips and pink lemonade.

Did you find a teacher in any of the photos? Grade 3, Mrs. Jeanette Michel; Grade 4, Mrs. Janet Hazlett; and Grade 5, Mrs. Shelly Pixler

Sister Elaine asks funds for El Salvador

Sister Elaine Eggert, chairman of the Madonna Fund for El Salvador, is again appealing for funds..

A letter from Sr. Elaine, who is now at the Regina Health Care Center in Richfield, was read at the St. Paul Ladies Guild Mother/Daughter/Granddaughter Breakfast on Saturday in Boeke Hall.

The letter, read by Southern Region NCCW corresponding secretary Maggie Colant said:

Dear Friends in Christ,

As you know, yearly, during the month of May, every woman in our diocese is asked to contribute at least $1.00 towards the Madonna Fund in EI Salvador. Every year the needs grow and, fortunately, so does the money collected increase each year. In 2007, $2,490.50 was raised, the largest sum ever, by the Summit Regional Council, an affiliate of the Cleveland Diocesan Council and the National Council of Catholic Women.

One half of the money collected is for our Cleveland Diocesan team in EI Salvador to benefit needy women and children. The other half of the money collected is for COAR (Community of Oscar A. Romero) to benefit abandoned, orphaned, and very poor children. With your help we can raise $3,000.00 this year!

Thank you, and God bless you, for your caring spirit towards God's poor. Contributions should be sent by May 27 to: Patricia Gerber, Treasurer, Summit Regional Council, NCCW, 156 Corunna AVE, Fairlawn, OH 44333. Please make checks payable to Summit Regional Council, NCCW, with memo for Madonna Fund for EI Salvador. For your convenience, I am enclosing a self-addressed envelope. Pat Gerber's telephone number is: 330-864-9690.

Sincerely in Mary,

Sister Elaine Eggjert

Notes:
Archbishop Oscar Romero (August 15, 1917 – March 24, 1980) , bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in El Salvador. was assassinated by a right-wing group as he held the consecrated host up during a Mass. This provoked an international outcry

In December 1980 the murders of Ita Ford and Maura Clarke, nuns of the Maryknoll Congregation in New York; Dorothy Kazel, a nun in the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland; and Jean Donovan, a lay missionary from the Cleveland Mission, registered shock waves throughout the Americas.

The Rev. Fr, R. Stephen Vellenga, diocesan mission director, was an associate at St. Paul in 1982-87 and was on the mission team in El Salvador in 1987-1995. He is pastor of St. Mary parish in Painesville..

Small crew completes great cleanup job

Sales at the St. Paul Parish Garden Plant Sale totaled at least $800 and the cleanup crew spread two truckloads of mulch in addition to three already spread around the church and school.

The Spring Cleanup crew coordinated by Ron McAvoy included Dave Clute, Bob Considine, Steve Dort, Dave Nesline, George Roberts, John Woofter and Hank Richard. Two
youths, Emily Roberts and Nathan Dort, joined their fathers in the spreading of mulch and weeding. Penny Roush and Maggie Walker were sales ladies for the plant sale and were joined by Jim Sopak who donated most of the plants for the sale. Helping to serve lunch were Ellen McAvoy and Terry Nesline.

McAvoy presented Sopak with an Angel statue he won at the plant sale.

The small but devoted crew of regulars accomplished much to enhance the areas around the rectory and John Jenkins Gym. Mulch had been spread earlier around the church and school.

The annual Men’s Fellowship Pancake Breakfast provided funds for the mulch. Funds earned in the garden plant sale will be used to repair the Blessed Mother statue in front of the rectory and for other gardening needs.

It was not involved in the cleanup, but the Marian Shrine provided a beautiful backdrop for parishioners who stopped by to enjoy. Tall tulips were in full bloom and flowering shrubs and trees added to the scene.

McAvoy expressed thanks for all the donations of plants and for the hard work of the cleanup crew.

Your help needed to spread the word

In the 2007 Parish Survey, parishioners gave their views on what more we can do as a parish to reach out to those in need.

The responses were:.
56% increase communications about parish ministries
44% Encourage more parishioner participation
33% Be more welcoming
41% Get more involved in the community
11% Other

The goal of St. Paul TODAY is to increase awareness of the work being carried on by more than 40 parish ministries and organizations. To provide news daily about the parish and school, however, we need someone to provide us with information.

It does not need to be a chore. If you can provide information, we can put it together for posting on the blog. Cleanup depends on weather, turnout of volunteers

Parish gardening coordinator Ron McAvoy hopes the weather forecaster is wrong. The forecast at the time of this posting is for showers Friday in the morning, then partly cloudy in the afternoon with a high of 61. Chance of rain 60%. The forecast for Saturday is a few morning showers.with highs in the low 60s and lows in the low 50s.

The success of the Plant Sale and Cleanup depend not only on the weather, but also on the turnout of volunteers.

Plants to be donated for the Parish Garden Plant Sale may be dropped off Friday,, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plants should be potted or in a paper or plastic bag and identified either by botanical name or common name and color.

Bring your rake, shovels and garden tools on Saturday from 8 a.m. to nooon to help in the cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon. If weather permits, there will be a picnic lunch with hotdogs and any side dish you may wish to bring. The plant sale will continue until 1 p.m.

If weather permits Saturday, McAvoy hopes to put down mulch round the rectory and gym and clean up leaves and other debris in the parking lot near the gym. There is a sewer on the south side of the parking lot and a hole near the driveway in the school (north) parking lot that needs to be filled. There also is weeding to do and cleanup of flower beds to prepare for planting.

Extra-terrestial life possible, says Vatican astronomer

Rome, May. 14, 2008 (CWNews.com) - In an interview for L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican's astronomer has offered his opinion that it is possible for Christians to believe in the existence of extra-terrestrial life.

Father José Gabriel Funes, an Argentine Jesuit, told the Vatican newspaper: "Just there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth there could be other beings, intelligent ones, created by God."

The astronomer's remarks appeared under the headline: "The extra-terrestrial is my brother." The interview in L'Osservatore Romano spawned dozens of headline stories in the secular press, many of them suggesting-- inaccurately-- that the Vatican had given official approval to belief in life on other planets.

Father Funes offered a more limited view, saying that the possibility of extra-terrestrial life cannot be disproved, and "does not contradict our faith." He argued that Christians should not attempt to place arbitrary limits on what God might have done in creating the universe.

However the Jesuit astronomer went on to speculate that if intelligent beings exist in another solar system, "they might have remained in full friendship with the Creator," and thus might not require salvation as the human race does.

Citing the perspective of St. Francis of Assisi, Father Funes said: "If we view earthly creatures as our brothers and sisters, why can't we speak of a brother from another planet?"

St. Paul Gleanings: lectio divina

The Year of St Paul, 28 June 2008 - 29 June 2009 timed to coincide with the approximate 200th of his birth, will provide the opportunity to enter more deeply into the teaching ofthe first great theologian of Christianity whose faith and thought have so marked our whole tradition.

The Apostle of the Nations His letters were the earliest works of our New Testament, predating the Gospels by several years. They give us an insight into the challenges of the first followers of Jesus Christ. More importantly they bear witness to the faith of a man whose life was transformed by his encounter with Christ.

Paul was no paper saint: his letters, as well as the Acts of the Apostles, reveal a human being beset with difficulties and weaknesses, but one for whom Christ who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body (Phil 3 :21) was everything.

Since the early 8th century of the Christian era, the Benedictine community of St Paul's outside the Walls in Rome has served the Basilica that enshrines the mortal remains of the Apostle. This community, living according to the Rule of St Benedict, has the practice of lectio divina as an integral part of its ancient spirituality. Lectio divina (the Latin phrase literally means "divine reading") is the prayerful pondering of the word of God in Scripture. The practice has been described under four "phases", lectio, meditatio, oratio and contemplatio (reading, pondering, praying and contemplating) and is undertaken on a daily basis by the monks.

Lectio divina may be done alone or with others. If it is a daily practice, as for the monks, it is part of the slow process of transformation of the person in Christ who is the Word incarnate. Ifa parochial or other group wishes to do it together periodically as an inspiration for their life or work, they may add a fifth phase, actio or missio, action or mission, concluding their session with the question, "What does the Lord want concretely of us now"?

The Benedictine monks of St Paul's have divided the thirteen letters attributed to St Paul into 365 short texts, ranging in length from three or four to ten verses, one text for each day of the Year, starting 29 June, solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul.

Vespers at Basilica to open Pauline Year

A colossal statue of Saint Paul stands at the center of the atrium of the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls. The statue was sculpted by Giuseppe Obici (1807-1878).

This is the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls where Pope Bendedict will officially open the Pauline Year with the liturgy of Vespers on June 28

On June 28, 2007, the Holy Father visited the Basilica and announced that the following year would be designated the “Pauline Year” to commemorate the bimillennium of the birth of Saint Paul. Thus, the “Pauline Year” will run from June 28, 2008 to June 29, 2009.

The Basilica is built above the burial place of St. Paul.

At the beginning of the 4th century, Emperor Constantine ordered the excavation of the cella memoriae, the place where Christians venerated the memory of Saint Paul the Apostle, beheaded under Nero around 65-67 A.D. Above his grave, located along the Ostiense Way, about two kilometers outside the Aurelian Walls surrounding Rome, Constantine built a Basilica which was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324.

Between 384 and 395 the Basilica was restored and enlarged with five naves opening out into an atrium or courtyard with four rows of columns. Throughout the centuries the Basilica was embellished and enhanced by the Popes. On the night of July 15, 1823, a fire destroyed the original Baslica and it was reconstructed and in 1928 the portico with 146 columns was added. Contemporary work in the Basilica has uncovered the tomb of the Apostle.
,
In the fifth century under the Pontificate of Leo the Great, the Basilica became the home of a long series of medallions which depict all the popes throughout history. This testifies, in an extraordinary way, to “the very great, the very ancient and universally known Church founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious Apostles, Peter and Paul”

Saint Paul Outside-the-Walls constitutes an extra-territorial complex administered by an Archpriest, His Eminence Cardinal Andrea Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo.

In addition to the Papal Basilica, the entire complex includes a very ancient Benedictine Abbey, restored by Odon of Cluny in 936. This Abbey remains active even today The Benedictine Monks of the ancient Abbey, founded near the tomb of the Apostle by Pope Gregory II (715-731), attend to the ministry of Reconciliation (or Penance) and the promotion of special ecumenical events.

It is in this Basilica that every year on the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, January 25, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity solemnly opens. The Pope has specified two privileged tasks for this Papal Basilica: the Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Penance) and the development and organization of ecumenical initiatives.
