Blessing of Pets: an annual event

Reckoning by dog years, you might consider 10-year-old Sport a Firestone Park senior citizen. His young master, Franklin Fausnight, is in the first grade at St. Paul School. Franklin and his mother, Jeanie, were among a couple of dozen parishioners who brought their pets to the Marian Shrine area near the rectory for the annual pet blessing Sunday afternoon.

Fr. Ralph Thomas, who apologized for having no dog biscuits, shared a plate of cookies with the pet owners and their animals.

The blessing is held each year on the Sunday near the feast day of St.
Francis Assisi on Oct. 4. St Francis (?1181-1226) is the patron saint of animals, birds and the environment.

Fr. Thomas read an 800-year-old Assisi prayer and the well-known St. Francis prayer and had pet owners join him in the Lord’s Prayer. He blessed each pet and sprinkled them with Holy Water.

Most of the animals were on their best behavior–only Sport let out a couple of grouchy barks when a couple of
young pups got too close during a posing for the group photo.

Saint of Day to feature 3 Archangels

Saturday is the feast day of the three Archangels. And that gives us an opportunity to remind you of one of the nice features of this blog: Saint of the Day.. Each day when you click on the Saint of the Day link at the left you can call up the short article on the saint whose feast day is being celebrated:
You also will find a Minute Meditation, a Daily Cathoic Question and Catholic News on the site by St. Anthony Messenger.

Here, in part, is what you will read when you click on the link Saturday:

Angels—messengers from God—appear frequently in Scripture, but only Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are named.

Michael appears in Daniel's vision as "the great prince" who defends Israel against its enemies; in the Book of Revelation, he leads God's armies to final victory over the forces of evil. Devotion to Michael is the oldest angelic devotion, rising in the East in the fourth century. The Church in the West began to observe a feast honoring Michael and the angels in the fifth century.

Gabriel also makes an appearance in Daniel's visions, announcing Michael's role in God's plan. His best-known appearance is an encounter with a young Jewish girl named Mary, who consents to bear the Messiah.

Raphael's activity is confined to the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he appears to guide Tobit's son Tobiah through a series of fantastic adventures which lead to a threefold happy ending: Tobiah's marriage to Sarah, the healing of Tobit's blindness and the restoration of the family fortune.

The memorials of Gabriel (March 24) and Raphael (October 24) were added to the Roman calendar in 1921. The 1970 revision of the calendar joined their feasts to Michael's.

Each of these archangels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel announces; Raphael guides.

Church is getting a new roof

Saint Paul’s new church, not quite four years old, is already getting a new roof. The church like many other buildings and homes in Firestone Park were heavily damaged by hail in June.

These workmen of Coppersmith Sheet Metal began work on the roof today. Coppersmith at 1455 S. Main St. has been serving the Akron area for four generations.

Work on the roof should be completed in about ten days

Other roof work also is planned at a cost exceeding $250,000 which is mostly covered by insurance. The work will repair trouble spots where water leaks have been occurring.. The 1926 school building will get a complete new roof and others will be repaired or replaced. The roof on the junior high building is still good, but it will be upgraded. A heating coil will be installed in a space over the entrance to the school where collecting ice has been a problem..

Decisions are still being made on these other roof repairs.

Our church was dedicated October 26, 2003

Summit South Cluster focuses on sharing

The first issue of Summit South Cluster News was inserted in Sunday’s bulletins. The Summit South 6 cluster team will summarize ideas and plans from each of the cluster meetings on a monthly basis either through bulletin inserts or by bulletin announcements to join committees to contribute your time, talent and treaasures.

If you have any ideas or questions you can forward them to chairperson Bill Bertsch at 220.882.4644 or wjbbjb@sbcglobal.net or communications liaision Kay Metzler 330.896.3350 or kay_metzler@hotmail.com

But first you might want to click on the headline above to read the first full bulletin insert.

Here is one salient pargraph from the first report:

“In our initial meetings, we have focused our discussions on the area of how to bring back inactive Catholics and ideas to increase weekly attendance. Celebrating the Eucharist together is the core of who we are as Catholics and in 2006, only 34% of those registered came to the churches in our cluster on an average weekly basis. So, the key question we need your help to answer is, "What happened to the other 66%?" Similar to the gospel of September 19th, we will continue to care for the 99 sheep (our faithful who come to Mass) but will search for that one lost sheep. Look for the next series of communications to focus on this mission from Bishop Lennon.”

This blog is a supplement to the parish newsletter to allow us to publish more current news on a daily basis as it becomes available. Any news from the blog which is not in the church bulletin also will be posted on the kiosk in the narthex (entrance of the church) for those who do not have a computer.

The blog will have news and photos from the school and parish organizations, obituaries of parishioners and information from the Diocese and other Catholic news sources.
You can email news items for the blog to hliggett@sbcglobal.net or stpaulakr@sbcglobal.net or drop them off at the rectory. Be sure to include the name and phone number of a person to contact.

St. Paul is the first parish in the Cleveland Diocese to offer a blog.

HOW TO READ THE BLOG:

Blog posts appear in the order they are posted. Many items also have a label at the bottom. Examples: altar servers, Mass intentions, Ladies Guild, PTO, School and obituaries. By clicking on any of the labels listed at the left, you can call up all the posts with that label.

Also on the left are links. One is a link to our online Calendar listing the many parish activities. When the calendar is on your screen, just click on the event which interests you to learn more about it.
There are also links to the Saint of the Day , the Cleveland Diocese and our temporary Parish website which is still under construction, but does have the Calendar and other information..

For further information on how to get information about your parish activity on the blog, you, may call Harry Liggett at 330-724.5808 or Patty Hogue at the rectory at 330-724-1263

Pinwheels for peace spin at St. Paul

Pinwheels for Peace created by students at St. Paul School were spinning after the 8:30 a.m Mass on Friday. Students placed 240 pinwheels on the front lawn of the church.

Father Steve provides some Shrine answers

Father Steve Burnovsky, pastor of Saint Hilary Church in Fairlawn and former associate at St. Paul, just happened to keep some old records of our Marian Shrine that we thought had been lost forever.

Our June 2007 newsletter included a story on the history of the shrine which left some unanswered questions which these records answer. Father Burnovsky was not at St. P
aul when the shrine was erected, but thankfully he kept copies of the records.

The shrine site was blessed in May, 1978 and on May 27, 1979 ther
e was a blessing of the statue. As noted in our article, the shrine was built during the pastorate of the late Rev. Fr. Thomas Koegel and the work was done by the late Robert Moore, a masonry contractor.

A copy of a check to Donzell’s Garden Center for $1,186.99 dated July 19, 1978 was for landscaping of the shrine with an invoice in that amount for stone. There also was an invoice from W. L. T
ucker Supply Co. of Cuyahoga Falls dated October 5, 1978 for $173.20 for Bessmer (cement) and sand.

On November 16, 1978 Fr. Koegel wrote a letter to Mazzolini Artcraft Company, 1607 E. 41st St., Cleveland, to order the “Mother and Child” statue to be executed in white marble. The particular statue was numbered 119 and cost approximately $1,000 with delivery expected by March.

The prayer for the blessing of the shrine was handwritten on a card. On one side of the card was written “Blessing Shrine Site May - 1978" On the other side was the following blessing:

O God, Our loving Father, wa ask your ✞ blessing upon this future shrine of the Mother of Your Son. May it help us to fullfill your will for us as we grow in our devotion to her whom You chose as your instrument to bring Jesus into our lives. May our Parish be placed under Her patronage and may our children experience her maternal care. We ask this thru the grace of Mary’s Son, O. L. J. C.

When the statue was blessed on May 27, 1979, the following prayer was said:

O heavenly Father, source of all life from whom all paternity and maternity derive, we ask your blessing upon this statue of your Son and the Mother you created tor Him. May all who look upon it be reminded of whose creatures they are, be conscious of your love for them, renew the commitment to their families, prize the preciousness of human life, and respect the power of procreativity in others and in themselves. May your divine plan be realized in us through the intercession of Mary and may our children experience that same matenal care with which our Catholic ancestors and we ourselves have been blest. Amen.

The traditional Catholic hymn “Praise to Mary, Heaven’s Gate” was sung. Click on the headline to read the verses.

Pope Benedict XVI to visit U.S. in April

Pope Benedict XVI will visit the US in April 2008, for a major address at UN headquarters in New York.

Although r
umors about a papal visit have circulated in the US media for the past week, the Vatican has not yet confirmed the trip. However informed sources have told CWN that plans are quickly taking shape for a spring trip to eastern US.

In April of this year the Pope accepted an invitation from UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon to address the international body. No date has been set for the Pope's appearance there, but the director of the Vatican press office, Father Federico Lombardi, has indicated that the trip would probably take place in 2008. Numerous published reports have now indicated that the Pope will speak to the UN around the middle of next April.

Specific plans for the papal visit are not yet fixed, informed sources stress. However, organizers are considering visits to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston as well as New York.

Pinwheels for Peace at St. Paul

"Pinwheels for Peace" created by students at St. Paul School will be spinning after the 8:30 a.m Mass on Friday.

Students will create pinwheels and write their thoughts about "war and peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side. On the other side, they will draw, paint, collage, etc. to visually express their feelings.

The students will assemble these pinwheels and plant them in front of the school as a public statement and art exhibit for the International Day of Peace on September 21.

In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. Pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country and the world

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, of Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In 2005, groups in over 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels on September 21 - there were approximately 500,000 pinwheels spinning throughout the world. Last year, 2006, over 1 million pinwheels were spinning in over 2,350 locations, including the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, Africa and South America. Locally,

Deborah Dodson, St. Paul Kindergarten teacher, will be coordinating our Pinwheels for Peace project this year. Beacon Journal editorial on Darfur

A Beacon Journal editorial on Thursday said the United Nations cannot moved fast enough to ensure a stronger force is deployed swiftly to Darfur to provide the security under which the necessary humanitarian aid and development work can proceed.

“Ban Ki-moon, the U.N. secretary general, is in Darfur this week on a mission to see things for himself and to push a three-point plan he believes will bring an end to the conflict in the western region of Sudan four years after it began,” the editorial said.

“In that period, more than 200,000 people have been killed and 2.2 million have been made homeless. An estimated 4 million people, their lands and properties destroyed, are dependent on humanitarian aid for their survival. The upheaval in Darfur has embroiled neighboring countries.

“The frustration and the shame of the past four years has been the inability of the world community to bring the genocidal conflict to an end. If it seemed the situation in Darfur couldn't get any worse, accounts such as the report of Jeffrey Gettleman in the New York Times on Monday offer a reality that makes bold and concerted action still more urgent.

''What started out four years ago in western Sudan as a rebellion and brutal counterinsurgency has cracked wide open into a fluid, chaotic, confusing free-for-all with dozens of armed groups, a spike in banditry and chronic attacks on aid workers,'' Gettleman wrote. The Janjaweed, government-backed Arab tribal militias that ravaged Darfur villages, are fighting one another over the same lands. Rebel forces that fought the government have split into numerous factions and are warring among themselves. In a region awash with weapons, banditry is rife, the roads are too dangerous to travel and the chaos seems to be spreading faster than anyone can control."
